Europe
continues to be a deep well of metal talent. Witness Godless
Truth from the Czech Republic, four guys with talent to
spare and a serious death metal attitude; technical and
brutal, they lay down slab after slab of sizzling death.
What a ridiculous wealth of good technical death metal we’ve
been weathering lately! Chalk this one up as being on par
with the hot new bands like Arsis and older projects like
Necrophagist; Godless Truth are plowing the fertile furrows
of crushing, heaving death. Quality musicianship and attention
to compositional details go a long way towards making this
work; guitarist Petr has the rhythmic side down pat, and
his solo takes are equal parts shred and melody. Vocals
are varied from Zdenek, from low throated rumbles to a more
audible howl. Kudos go to the engine room; new drummer Libor
is a smooth beast on the kit, applying blast beats when
needed and backing off to create space. Considering they
had issues with recording the drums (the Czech Republic
is apparently a bit weak on the technology side of things)
they sound very good. The bass player Tom is mixed higher
than usual for typical death metal (a trend I wish would
catch on…), playing within the context of the songs and
not trying to be the Steve Harris of death metal. This is
one of those albums that’s short (seven songs) but solid
through each song, and has more than a little replay value
as each song has enough going for it that you pick up new
stuff on each listen. It’s hard to pick out high points,
but here’s a few. “Mission: Fuck You” has cool breakdowns
that don’t sound metalcore in the least (thankfully... hell
yeah death metal knows breakdowns!) and a lead break at
3:10 that manages to encompass both melodic and shredding
in the same breath. “Reprobate Intention” has a slaying
intro/verse riff which is exactly the kind of thing I like
to turn way up on the stereo to freak out the spuds. Then
there’s the break at 2:40, as they lurch into a start/stop
pattern, into the solo, back out into more sick vocals,
and then this massively cool break at 4:13 which hits the
sweet spot. I’m running out of superlatives for Godless
Truth; if you’re a lover of technically sound death metal
you owe it to yourself to seek this out.
