REVIEWS:
We finally
have the arrival of one of slamming death metal’s most anticipated
debut full lengths. This band from Russia are huge within
the scene, having utilised the internet and namely myspace
to build a huge following over the past couple of years.
So now that the album has finally arrived after almost a
year of advertising and pre-orders dating back a few months,
is it actually worth all the hype? Listening to the album
I can detect a high level of quality in both the playing
of the material and the production of the recording, along
with Lacerated Enemy’s renowned quality of layout and presentation,
but unfortunately this, for me, is the best aspect of this
release. While the music is enjoyable and carries a lot
of fun grooves and heavy slam riffs, it seems to absolutely
reek of Devourment. Fair enough, I’m a big Devourment fan
myself, but I’d personally prefer if Devourment songs were
actually played by Devourment. It gets to the point where
I’m actually noticing almost exact riffs from their songs!
The thing that really get’s to me is that all the breaks
in the songs are performed exactly the same as the aforementioned.
Just before a tempo change everything will stop with a guttural
growl leading into one guitar track playing a slam riff,
accentuated by the ride bell and then a drum fill before
the drop. It all seems a bit shameless to me. One other
thing that disappoints me is that I’d personally prefer
more variation in the vocals, not necessarily in the range
but merely in the style of growl. I don’t want to accuse
this release of being bad at all because it isn't, I just
feel like it could sound a bit more individual with certain
aspects of the band’s writing and structuring efforts. A
lot of people will definitely be happy with this album so
I can’t slate it for that, but with the possibility of a
new Devourment album this year I know what I’d rather wait
for… the real deal!
